professor of african and afro-american studies, author

Jon Michael Spencer has written numerousarticlesand books concerning theology and music, on african american hymnology, on theological understanding of popular music. He coined the term theomusicology, describing an interdisciplinary field of study drawing methods from sociology, psychology and anthropology as well as musicology and theology.

Spencer have elaborated his theory in several of his books and articles, the best introduction would be Theological Music – Introduction to Theomusicology (1991, Greenwood Press, New York). It's probably not available in bookstores, but should be found in university libraries. Spencer is also editor of the journal Black Sacred Music: A Journal of Theomusicology.

For a short presentation of his theory on theomusicology and my own application of it see Theology and music, an extract from a meditation on methods in "rock/theology
