Introduction
Hiphop
is not just rap music, and it’s definately not only about the platinum
selling stars figuring in mass media. It is a culture, often defined by
its four elements of expression: writing (graffiti), breaking (b-boying/b-girling)
dj’ing and mc’ing (rap). In addition there is the fifth element:
Knowledge. Knowledge of self, of your community and your heritage –
Knowledge of your self in relation to the Universe. Hiphop is a way of
life, it is a way of finding your path in life. Hiphop is a dynamic and
multilayered culture, not monolithic in any way. It is underground and
mainstream, local and global, spiritual and carnal. It is in the streets,
in the schoolyards, in the academy and in small clubs all over the world
as well as in the music industry and mass media. You can make hiphop your
own, but you cannot own it. As KRS One says: “you are hiphop.”
History
The formation of hiphop culture are generally located to The Bronx in
New York City, but important contributions came also from other cities
in the US, like Philadelphia and Los Angeles. Graffiti was the first
